Spicy Chicken Biryani

I have been waiting to make some non -veg biryani for a long time. And I got the opportunity this weekend when hubby dear wanted me to make him Chicken Biryani. I asked Amma for a recipe and she said there are so many varieties, so which one I want. I said I want one that is simple yet tasty.

When I got down preparing it, I was surprised as how fast it got over. I was able to manage all the items on time. But for once I was able to make my husband say it was very spicy. They said they would eat it for dinner again by which time it would’ve toned down. This is what I prepare for lunch with Chicken – Briyani, Gravy and Roast.


Chicken Briyani

Serves: 4
Preparation Time: 20 mins
Cooking Time : 15 mins
Cuisine : Andhra

Ingredients Needed:

For Marinade:

Chicken – 250 gms
Curd – 1/2 cup
Chilli powder – 1 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder a pinch
Ginger Garlic paste – 1 tsp
Mint Leaves – 1/2 cup
Coriander leaves – 1/2 cup

For Rice

Basmati Rice – 1 1/2 cup (
Onions – 2
Green chillies – 2
Chilli powder – 1 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Ginger Garlic paste – 1 tsp
Cinnamon – 2″
Bay leaf – 1
Cloves – 3
Cardamom – 2
Salt to taste
Oil – 2 tbsp
Butter – 1 tbsp
Method to prepare:

Clean and soak Basmati for 10 to 15 mins.

Clean and chop chicken to required size. Mix curd, chilli pw, coriander turmeric, Mint and coriander leaves to the chicken. Let it marinate for 10 to 15 mins.

Meanwhile chop Onions as julienne, chillies. Heat oil and butter. Add all the whole spices. Then sautรฉ in Onions till they are brown in colour, add ginger garlic paste. Fry well.

Then add the chicken marinade. Cook on high flame for 5 mins and simmer till the oil comes out.

Add the rice, salt, 3 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 whistle.

Since this is quite spicy, Onion Raita would be nice but I prepare Gravy which turned out to be quite heavy.

Adjust the spiciness by reducing the chilli powder and green chillies.

Will post the chicken Roast tomorrow.

  3. Biryani looks very good. Although I like the hyderabadi biryani, i love to make this type at home. I can eat just the biryani without any side dishes. Cant imagine you made 3 chicken dishes on the same day. Wow.

Hi im anna, newly married with not much of cooking experience. when i tried your recipe i didn’t have mint leaves. i don know if thats y it didn’t turn out tat great. it became very spicy and the rice was a little soggy. but the taste was not not there at all. i did everything as per ur ingredients.. i really need help. i feel bad that i wasn’t able to get it right

    I tried this today. Didn’t come out as expected. Could u pls give me the measure for SALT?.. I know it depends on person.. But would like to know your measure for the same recipe. Instead of pressure cooker I cooked in a covered pan for 12 mins on simmer after boil. Also should we make the spices into powder /paste?

  9. Hi Devu, as you said salt depends on individual taste. But I used about 1/2 tsp. I used whole spices as I have mentioned in the recipe. When you are cooking in pan directly, you might need to add some more water and also chicken has to be really cooked. For the measure I used, on direct stove, Basmati needs about 15 mins in sim. Do let me know the proportions you used, so that i can help.

  10. Hi Srivalli! My husband loves biryani and I’d like to surprise him with this. I have an electronic pressure cooker, however, and was wondering if you could give me a better idea of how long to set the pressure timer, as there are no ‘whistles’ with this machine. Thanks!

    dbharne, thats good to know. While using electronic pressure cooker, I follow two methods.

    First method

    On a stove top, using a pan, follow the same process as I have mentioned, till you add the rice. Fry for a min and switch off stove.

    In the electronic cooker, place the pan with the plate inside. Add all the fried masala and rice to the electronic cook pan and add the required water. Adjust the salt and cover and cook till the button is on rice cooking.

    Second method

    Add oil and place the masala in the electric cooker pan and switch to cooking mode. Once it gets done, it will turn to warm.

    You need to follow the same process for all the steps, till you reach frying the rice. Add water and cover and let it cook till it gets turned to warm.

    Most effective method will be following the first method.

    Also you might have reduce the water as in electric cooker it might become too soggy. Reduce abt a half a cup of water if required.

    Let me know if you have any other doubt.

    I was searching for a biryani recipe which can be prepared using pressure cooker and came across this. Its been more than a year that I found this recipe and I have tried it several times, each time its a hit and I am well known for biryani now.   26. Pink If it's only the Dum process that you want to do, then my safe bet will be about 125Deg C for 10 mins, then increased if you feel it's required. But this is only my gut feeling, I have never done it myself.

    Can you please tell me the exact measurements you used.
    Like,how much grams of rice did you use in this recipe. Not sure what 1 1/2 cup means and doesnt this briyani need tomatoes?
